Child & Family Counseling

I work with children and parents collaboratively, using a number of strategies to shift family dynamics and bring about positive change.  Common results include more teamwork and cooperation, an increase in self-esteem and confidence, fewer power struggles, better behavior both at home and at school, kids making more friends, kids’ ability to manage their anger and/or anxiety and make good choices.

Treating a child usually involves family therapy, parent coaching and play therapy. Issues we work on may include behavior, ADD/ADHD, learning disorders, giftedness, social skills, depression, anxiety, anger management, effects of substance abuse in the family, and sexual orientation. I tailor counseling interventions to you and your child's needs, drawing from family systems theory, attachment theory, cognitive-behavioral theory (CBT), and mindfulness. I build on the child's strengths and capabilities in a way that fosters confidence, self esteem, self regulation, and connection.

At the end of treatment, both child and parents usually feel empowered, having new tools to work with, and a new sense of teamwork in their life. It is a great joy for me to see kids and families work through tough issues and come out on top. I have heard on a number of occasions that kids can't wait for their therapy session!
